My last month..

23. června 2010 v 18:14 |  Volunteers in OKO
Hi boys and girls... old and young...

the end of our Evs-year here in Rychnov is not far off...unfortunately!! Our last big event, the summer-camp, will take place in 3 weeks. At the moment we're busy with preparing everything.

The camp will be from the 11th till 18th of July in the Giant Mountanins. We're a team of 4 teachers and the two of us (Miri and me). There will be around 25 children from the age of 9-16 years. Each morning the boys and girls are busy with english-lessions and in the afternoon we're going to do some bigger actions in and around the forest like treasure hunt, parkour-games and strategy-games. We will go on a hiking tour to the sneska, we'll have a "scary evening", a movie evening and much more.

For me personally the last few weeks run very fast...I would like to make the time running slower so that I can at least finish my czech book.. I started to find some Czech friends,  went to some concerts and start more than ever to enjoy it to be here...it's - I think -  as always the same in the end...

So, see you maybe one day again in Czech Republic or somewhere else...I can just recomend EVS to all, who are curious for other countries and a new point of few in general.

Ahojky, Mej Se Krazny!!!

Intercultural evening

3. května 2010 v 16:30
On the 22.nd of April we -the evs team in oko- prepared an evening meeting in order to speak and play about our countries with people from Rychonv... about 40 or 50 people joined the so-called 'intercultural evening': they could see some pictures about Germany, France and Italy, taste some typical food and wine, listen to our presentations and play... but now, let's read the volunteers' opinions about the evening:
Doro:
For me the "Interkulturni vecer" was a nice and interesting experience: A lot of people from the OKO-language clubs, friends, teachers and others came to listen to our presentations, taste our food and read our posters. Before I was a bit nervous since I didn't knot how many people would come, if our material was enough and also if the people would understand our english. But finally it was very relaxed. Our presentation was maybe a bit too long - thanks to everybody who played until the end!! I liked that the people were open and really interested in the things we said. I had some nice conversation. The wine-time was perfect ;-)
Miriam:
Interculturality is for me the most important part of my evs experience, so the intercultural evening was really an interesting action in this field. I'm glad that quite a lot of people joined it and they were truly interested in our countries, our food, pictures and wine...I particularly appreciated the talkings before the presentations, when people could come to our tables, taste the food and just talk to us about whatever they were interested in.

Happy Easter girls and boys!!

Summary Of The Volunteers Activities Until Right Now

8. ledna 2010 v 10:47
Day of languages- September

Time period: 2 weeks preparing the material, 3 days beeing active in the townhall, whole exhibition took about 2 weeks
Idea finding: This day was set up by the EU and wants to make the people aware of their country, ohter languages and neigbourcountries so our task was to find some easy playful methods to make children familiar with this topic. We thought about geasy combrehensible and varied games. Such as putting the right flag on the right country, Twister with flags and different kind of languages....
Summary Altogether for our very first exhibition it worked quite good although we had some communication problems (the teachers helped us a lot).
The mixture of games with thinking, sportive and general knowledge tasks was perfect.
What to improve The organisation of visitors was a bit chaotic because there where always about 2 or 3 groups present in the same time. Space was also a little problem, next time we have to work out the disposition of the different activities before.

Christmas Time In The Life Of An OKO-Volunteer

15. prosince 2009 v 16:16 | Volunteers |  News in OKO
Hello everybody,

As for everybody else Christmas Time is for us both a harmonious and exhausting time: We tried to bake some german vanocká (but the result was unfortunately not as good as expected. Anyway-we had fun!^) and to decorate our flat a little bit with Christmas decoration. Besides in the last four weeks we went to different secondary schools in Rychnov and the surroundings- a busy time full with friendly people (special thanks to all the teachers who helped us with the translation and cared about us just as perfect as it could be possible!) and great experiences. Our point of view on the teacher's profession also changed a lot and for some of us it's a better work then for the others. In the schools we learned quite a lot about Czech Christmas traditions and also got a present of the Nikolas - and not black color: we´re so good volunteers ;-)
This last week before Christmas we're preparing little presents for our family, because we are all going back home for Christmas Time. We really miss our families!

We hope you will have a nice baking time and a wonderful Christmas with potatoe salad and carp J
See you soon,

Kathrin, Miriam, Nolwenn and Doro

On arrival-training in November...

11. listopadu 2009 v 9:44 |  Volunteers in OKO
Now, we're back from our on arrival-training.
It was a very funny time full of new experience, we met a lot of volunteers who are in Czech Republic and who come from all over Europe.
Thanks to that, now we can travel in the whole Czech Republic to visit them. But we also learnt a lot of other things about non-formal education, communication, animation with children, how to give and receive a feedback. It was very intersting.
Of course, we did also a lot of games not to be too serious all the time.
During this week, we ate a lot of Czech food and especially knedliky. It was a week full of calories and we were happy to come back home to eat again normal food. But anyway, now we are able to prepare our own knedliky ( the cook showed us how to do).
And above all, we got to know the wonderful village of Stoky, 2000 inhabitants, a pub and nothing more, in the middle of the South Bohemian nowhere.
Now we're back to work and we have to prepare Christmas exhibition and the schools visit...

Hello ladies and gentlemen, ahoj deti,

we can't believe that we're already here for more than 1 months and we must say that we really enjoy our life here..."venku je zima"...the time runs fast;)!

Our current project is a small exhibition about "Halloween" and its roots and other days, which are celebrated in these days on the world. For our young visitors we prepared lot of funny games and a few handycraft works. This exhibition takes place in the town hall and offers something for young and old. At the moment we're very bussy in handycraft works to give the exhibition a nice ambience. This cold autumn-days are perfekt for this kind of work...a cup of coffee or tea, some czech biscuits and a handful of motivated volunteers are the best working conditions;)!

We're also looking forward to our school-projects in november. For that we have to meet the teachers and discuss topics we have to do reasearches on. Wintertime seems to be a busy time in Oko...

Would be nice to see you on the exhibition or somewhere else!

Our first month in CZ

15. října 2009 v 16:56 |  Our daily life - September, October 2009

little interview

What do you think about Rychnov nad Kneznou and your life there?

Rychnov as small as it is seems to be a very nice town. We appreciate the athmosphere and
already know a few very friendly people from here. We all enjoy the nature around Rychnov, there are so many things to discover for example the beautiful lake and the forest.

What have you already seen in Czech Republik?

First we are discovering the region of Rychnov like Chrudim, Hradec and Pardubice. During this travel we get to know the daily life and habits here.

Have you been confronted with some difficulties and surprises?

The first new and a bit difficult step for us was to speak enlish with each other and express everything in an other language. For two of us the new experience to life in a communitie life was completely knew but funny and we had many things to discover (e. g. the vacuum cleaner and washing machine). To speak english here with other people, especially the older persons is not always possible, it's easier to speak german on the street.

What do you do in your leisure time?

Due to some teachers in Oko we found a lot of activities very quickly like badminton, musculation and basketball. That gives us the possibility to get to know other people very fast. We were already hiking, biking in the region, lying in the park, jogging, walking, watching a basketball game of the Rychnov team s. o.

What do you intend to do this year?

Be succesfull in our work in OKO and
travelling, hiking, getting to know a lot of other people and learn about us and others.

more information will follow...;)
